“When artist Kees Verkade was asked to make a memorial for General William J. Donovan, Class of 1907, he watched archived films of the war hero and interviewed his colleagues for inspiration. Verkade created the bronze sculpture ‘Tightrope Walker’ to portray Donovan’s courage and ‘controlled daring.’” (Flying Horses, Tightrope Walkers and Other Campus Icons, Columbia University Libraries)
